Bright tradition of learning
(Baonghean) - The school named after patriot Phan Boi Chau has been a bright spot in the country's education sector for more than half a decade. Under the dedicated guidance of teachers, generations of students have grown up, progressed, and made many outstanding contributions to the cause of national construction and development.
Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted was established right at the time when the US escalated its bombing of the North and Nghe An was in the key area of attack by the US Air Force and Navy. In the early days, the school had only 2 specialized Math classes selected from the district-level Math competition. At that time, the school did not have a name or a location, teachers and students sometimes had to study together with Huynh Thuc Khang High School, sometimes had to go up to Do Luong to evacuate to avoid American bombs. Amidst the "bombs falling, bullets exploding", overcoming the hardships and dangers, the school's students remained steadfast, achieving many high results in the Northern excellent student competitions and the selections for universities and studying abroad.

The joy of teachers and students of Phan School on the day of welcoming student Nguyen Ngoc Khanh - Silver Medalist of International Physics Olympiad back home. |
The construction of the school only began after 1974 and the first location of the school was the square land that the People's Committee of Dien Thanh commune gave up on the campus of the commune's primary school. The school was simple, the greatest asset was a row of thatched houses, bamboo, but the students of the school were always proud because after many days of waiting and moving, they had a real school, with a laboratory, a campus, enough classrooms for specialized classes in Literature, Mathematics... The school was put into operation as the first specialized school in the North and the first specialized school in the whole country. In the following years, although there were still not enough meals, not enough water for daily use, not enough light for studying, the school began to reap many remarkable achievements. And it seemed that the harder it was, the more deprived it was, the more the spirit and determination of the teachers and students of Phan school multiplied and the more challenges, the more they tempered their will, the close-knit teacher-student and friend relationship. The image of Phan School students at that time also partly symbolizes the studious tradition of Nghe An people. It seems that there has never been a year when the school did not have excellent students who won high prizes in national, regional and international competitions for excellent students. In 1983, although there was no specialized Physics class, student Dinh Van Dung was selected to participate in the first International Physics Competition in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2000, student Dao Anh Duc won a double of 2 Bronze Medals in the Asian and International Physics Olympiads. In 2003, student Dao Thanh Hai won a Silver Medal in the International Chemistry Olympiad.
Continuing the tradition of their predecessors, the next generation has constantly strived and brought many achievements to the school. In the past 20 years alone, the school has had 28 students participating in international and regional excellent student competitions in the subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Informatics, including 5 Gold Medals, 5 Silver Medals, 7 Bronze Medals, and 4 Certificates of Merit at international and Asian excellent student Olympic competitions. Many of them won 2 to 3 medals such as Nguyen Tat Nghia, Cao Ngoc Thai, Nguyen Canh Hao, Nguyen Huy Hoang. This is also the place where many famous writers, poets, and literary critics were nurtured and nurtured, such as Vo Thi Hao, Nguyen Dang Diep, Giang Huong, Hong Thai, Tran Kim Hoa, Nhu Binh, Dinh Thu Hien, Le Ho Quang, Le Thi Thu Thuy, Duong Hai Yen, Duong Nu Khanh Thuong, Phan Thuy Thao, Duong Nu Cam Tam, etc.
In particular, in the 2014-2015 school year, students of Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted have made many achievements. The first to mention is the Silver Medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad that student Hoang Anh Tai just won in Chiang Mai (Thailand) in July. The medal is the result of more than 18 years of waiting and marks the return of Mathematics, one of the subjects that has left its mark on many generations of students of the school such as Phan Huy Tu, Truong Ba Tu, Nguyen Canh Hao, Ho Ngoc Ky... Or the story of Nguyen Ngoc Khanh, the owner of two medals at the Asian Physics Olympiad and most recently the Silver Medal at the International Physics Olympiad, is also a testament to the relentless efforts of the school's students. Also this year, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted had 82 students achieving national excellent student awards, including 1 First Prize, 31 Second Prizes, 32 Third Prizes and 18 Encouragement Prizes, ranking 3rd in the country and having more than 40 students achieving high scores in the National High School Exam. This achievement once again brings glory to the school named after the patriot Phan Boi Chau, further fostering the tradition of studiousness in Nghe An.
More than half a decade has passed, the Party and the State have also given many noble titles for the contributions of Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted to the country's education cause. However, for teachers, there is no gift more precious than the success and remarkable growth of generations of students. From this school, under the dedication and guidance of teachers, thousands of students have reached high and far, making positive contributions to many important fields of the country. Typical examples include Associate Professor, Doctor Thai Ba Can, currently a senior lecturer, former Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education; Vu Quoc Phong, Professor, Doctor of Science currently working at Ohio University (USA); Professor, Doctor Nguyen Xuan Thang, member of the Party Central Committee, President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences... and thousands of students later became prestigious and successful managers, scientists, writers, journalists, teachers, and businessmen of the country. Looking more broadly, there are few schools in this S-shaped land that have as many achievements as Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, even though most of the teachers and students of the school grew up in poor rural areas.
Mr. Dau Van Mui, the school's principal, sincerely shared that: The mutual trust, the "joint efforts, common intelligence, common hearts" of generations of teachers and students over the years is the strength for the school to overcome difficulties and become one of the leading specialized schools in the country.
