On the evening of April 5, Mr. Vi Tan Hoi, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tuong Duong District (Nghe An), said that a gold mine collapsed in Tuong Duong. The victim who died in the pile of rocks and soil was La Thi Trang, commonly known as Pay (11 years old), a 5th grade student at Yen Tinh Primary School.

According to Mr. La Van Nam, Pay's father, taking advantage of the weekend off from school, Pay followed his mother to the stream area of Huoi Pai village, Yen Tinh commune to dig for gold. After several times going in and out of the gold mine to scoop up soil and bring it out to the stream for his mother to pan for gold, on Saturday (April 2), the gold mine collapsed, and Pay was buried under a pile of rocks and dirt.

It was not until the afternoon of April 5 that the body of Vi Thi Pay was pulled from the rubble by local rescuers. The accident once again raised a warning about illegal gold mining activities, which have affected many rivers and streams in this area, polluted the environment, and caused many gold mine collapses.

We will continue to provide information on this incident.
