After storm Rammasun, the North has heavy rain and high floods

Starting this evening, July 19, the Northern provinces will have widespread heavy rain, causing floodwaters on river and stream systems to rise.

At 9:30 this morning, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting issued a flood warning in the northern provinces.

Due to the impact of storm No. 2, starting from this evening, July 19-22, heavy to very heavy rain will occur widely in the Northern provinces. The total rainfall is forecast to be about 200 - 300 mm. Of which, the Northern mountainous provinces are likely to have about 300 - 400 mm of rain.

Heavy rains have caused floodwaters to rise in all river systems in the region. It is forecasted that the Red River – Thai Binh River system will experience a flood with an amplitude of 2-5 meters upstream and 2-3 meters downstream.

In addition, the water level of the Thao River in Yen Bai is likely to rise above alert level 2, the Lo River in Tuyen Quang is likely to rise to alert level 1. The water level in the upper reaches of the Thai Binh River is likely to rise to alert level 1, and the lower reaches of Pha Lai is likely to rise to 3 meters. The Red River in Hanoi is likely to rise to 5.5 meters. Small rivers in the northern and northeastern mountainous areas of Quang Ninh, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Ha Giang, and Lao Cai provinces are likely to rise to alert levels 2-3.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting especially warns the provinces of Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Lang Son, Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, and Lai Chau to be vigilant against flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.

According to information from the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention, as of 7 a.m. on July 19, the northern mountainous provinces have evacuated 324 households living along rivers, streams, and areas at high risk of flash floods and landslides to safe places.
