"The total cost of repairs will be around 70 million rubles (more than one million USD), the damaged areas will be repaired during the modernization process, the completion deadline will not be affected. The damage repair work accounts for less than 1% of the total current workload," said Alexei Rakhmanov, president of Russia's United Shipbuilding Corporation, on November 22.

Rakhmanov mentioned the cost of repairing a total of 52 points of damage they discovered on the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier after the PD-50 floating dock sank on September 30. The incident caused the floating dock's crane to break and fall, damaging the flight deck and railings of the ship. Russia will have to add funds to the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier modernization project to cover these additional costs,RIA Novostireport

The PD-50 floating dock of the 82nd Shipyard in Murmansk sank after experiencing an electrical failure, leaving one dead and one missing. Following the incident, the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier was towed to the 35th Shipyard near Murmansk.

Rakhmanov said that the United Shipbuilding Corporation has floating docks that can repair and maintain all warships in the Russian Navy. However, the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier is large, and only the PD-50 floating dock is capable of serving the upgrade process of this warship. Russia is forced to salvage and restore the PD-50 floating dock, or build a new large-sized floating dock to continue modernizing this warship.

Financial difficulties in the context of Russia being embargoed and the defense budget not prioritizing surface ships may make it impossible for Admiral Kuznetsov to operate again in 2021, or even risk being permanently shelved.

Admiral Kuznetsov is the only aircraft carrier and currently the flagship of the Russian Navy. This warship can carry 12 P-700 Granit anti-ship missiles, 192 3K95 Kinzhal air defense missiles, 18 Su-33 fighters, 6 MiG-29K fighters and 6 Ka-31 helicopters.
