(Baonghean) Doctor Duong Cong Hoat's fate to become a doctor was also by chance. In 1974, after a period of time in the Cu Chinh Lan Youth Volunteer Corps, he was determined to take the university entrance exam. With a fairly high score, he had the right to choose between two paths: one was to study Agriculture in Cuba, the other was to study Medicine at a domestic University. And he chose medicine, thinking that he still had a family burden and despite the hardship and poverty, it was difficult to leave his homeland...

He was determined to study and achieve high results while studying at Hanoi Medical University. By the end of his fourth year, this diligent and excellent student was admitted to the Party. This was truly an important milestone in Dr. Hoat's life, and also a rare honor for the student generation at that time.

After graduating in 1980, there were two paths for the young doctor to choose: stay as a lecturer or return to his hometown, and the path to return to his hometown was chosen without any regret. With so many dreams and ambitions, Doctor Hoat brought along a light backpack to the Nghe Tinh Department of Health to... apply for a job.

And the first condition set by the Department of Health: if a young doctor wants to work in the city, he must first go to the mountains. With the approval of the Department's leaders, Doctor Hoat "packed up" and went to Ky Son, the most remote and difficult mountainous district of the province.

Here, from the position of treating doctor, he was trusted to hold the position of Head of the Department of Surgery - Obstetrics and then Deputy Director of Ky Son General Hospital. Within 5 years in Ky Son, the doctor helped the hospital improve its surgical and obstetric techniques. More specifically, he contributed a lot of effort to build Na Loi Medical Station. Also starting from the "point" Na Loi, the movement to build commune health stations was formed and developed in the district, helping people to receive better and more timely health care.

After 5 years of working at Ky Son, Dr. Hoat was transferred to Nghe An Children's Hospital (which was newly established at that time). Starting from the position of treating doctor in the Department of Surgery, he continued to study additional specialties: level 1 specialist, pediatric surgery... During this time, he and the first generation of doctors such as Dr. Doan Quang Luu, Dr. Nguyen Van Thu (retired) and some doctors currently working at the Institute such as Dr. Nguyen Van Son (Head of Surgery Department - Children's Hospital) laid the foundation for pediatric surgery (phase 2 - when advanced techniques were available) at the Institute. Pediatric patients can undergo surgery for anorectal atresia, choledochal cysts, esophageal atresia, congenital malformations of the digestive tract... with a high success rate.

In 1992, after the separation of the province, the Surgery department of the Children's Hospital was transferred to merge with a department of the Vietnam - Poland Hospital (now the Provincial General Friendship Hospital). Doctor Hoat also worked here for 10 years, was trusted to hold the positions: Head of the General Planning Department - Deputy Secretary of the Hospital Party Committee. During this time, he studied neurosurgery for 1 year in France and also became one of the first people to successfully implement neurosurgery at that time. In 2000, he returned to the Children's Hospital, became Head of the Surgery Department and from the end of 2001 until now, he has held the position of Director of Nghe An Children's Hospital.

During 10 years of "taking the lead", he always spent time on his expertise, encouraging and helping his colleagues to improve their skills and service spirit. He himself participated in many surgeries to save the lives of patients with serious illnesses, contributing a lot of effort to develop the hospital. For many consecutive years, the Children's Hospital has achieved the title of Excellent Hospital, is a unit that has won the Second Class Labor Medal, a typical provincial unit in "Studying and following the moral example of Ho Chi Minh", is one of the few hospitals recognized to meet the standards of quality management of medical examination and treatment according to ISO standards...

Constantly concerned with the health status of "special" patients, especially children, Dr. Hoat was the leader of the research project on the disease status and evaluation of the treatment results of Delta muscle fibrosis in Nghe An (this project won a provincial award) and at the same time encouraged the movement of writing topics, experiences, and initiatives among the hospital's medical staff. From here, it created a sense of competition, as well as a spirit of helping and sharing among colleagues with the goal of helping the sick.

He confided: I realized that I made the right choice when focusing on the direction of Pediatric Surgery even though it was a difficult path. A child born with congenital malformations, facing the decision to operate or not operate is also difficult. And a doctor needs to work with the highest meaning and spirit: to bring real life to the patient, a healthy, good life". After 10 years as the hospital director, he still has 10 unfinished big things" (he wrote them down on paper and determined to "resolve them as soon as possible").

With his achievements, Dr. Hoat was awarded the title of Meritorious Physician in 2005, and he and Dr. Pham Van Thanh (currently Director of Nghe An Department of Health) are preparing documents to be considered for the noble title: People's Physician on the upcoming occasion of February 27.
