In the 2014 high school graduation exam, the Ministry of Education and Training will maintain the same exam question format as in 2013. This was confirmed by Mr. Mai Van Trinh, Director of the Department of Examination and Quality Assurance (Ministry of Education and Training), at a press conference announcing some details about the 2014 high school graduation exam and university/college entrance exam.

Accordingly, the subjects of Mathematics, Literature, History, and Geography will still be tested in essay format. Chemistry, Biology, and Physics will be tested in multiple-choice format.

However, in order to assess students' foreign language proficiency and skills more comprehensively, this year's high school graduation exam will include an essay section alongside the multiple-choice section for the foreign language subject.

Mr. Mai Van Trinh also stated that currently, there are disparities in the teaching and learning of foreign languages across different localities. Students are still very passive in their learning of this subject and have not yet acquired the communication skills that meet the set standards.

However, foreign languages play a crucial role in Vietnam's integration with the region and the world, and in training "global citizens." Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training will soon aim to make foreign languages a compulsory examination subject in the curriculum up to grade 12. The teaching and learning of this subject will differ from the current approach, so that students can not only communicate effectively but also use the language in all aspects of their work and integrate with the region and the world.
