Speaking at the Workshop, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese said:

To date, there are more than 4.5 million Vietnamese people living, working and studying in 103 countries and territories. Resolution 36-NQ/TW dated March 26, 2004 of the Politburo on work with overseas Vietnamese is an important document of the Party defining policies and directions in work with overseas Vietnamese. The goal of the Resolution is to promote the strength of national unity, create conditions for the overseas Vietnamese community to stabilize their lives and develop, and preserve national identity.

In recent times, domestic and foreign media agencies have actively reported on the support for our compatriots abroad to preserve the Vietnamese language, maintain the national cultural identity towards the Fatherland; at the same time, promote the image of the country, people, Vietnamese culture, promote the image of Vietnamese enterprises and goods to the overseas Vietnamese community and international friends. The media agencies have played a good role as a bridge in maintaining and promoting the traditional cultural identity of the nation and the Vietnamese language in the overseas Vietnamese community.

Mr. Tran Ba Viet Dung, Director of the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Education and Training, said: On March 22, 2004, the Prime Minister approved the Project "Supporting the teaching and learning of Vietnamese for Vietnamese people abroad" in Decision No. 281/QD-TTg. The project has helped generations of Vietnamese people abroad not forget the Vietnamese language, be able to communicate, preserve and strengthen national identity, maintain and promote feelings and awareness towards their roots and towards their country.

To implement the Project, the Ministry of Education and Training sent a working group to survey the situation and needs of teaching and learning Vietnamese of overseas Vietnamese living in the United States, France, Thailand and some other countries to compile two sets of books, "Happy Vietnamese" and "Vietnamese Homeland", to serve Vietnamese people in these countries.

Although the Project "Supporting the teaching and learning of Vietnamese for overseas Vietnamese" ended in 2010, the Ministry of Education and Training still considers the dissemination, maintenance and development of Vietnamese language and culture as one of the important tasks that need to be continued.

In the coming time, the Ministry will continue to carry out a number of tasks such as: Printing official Vietnamese language books for overseas Vietnamese and widely distributing them to those in need. In addition, organizing training courses for Vietnamese language teachers in a number of countries, sending teachers to teach Vietnamese in Thailand, Laos and a number of other countries...

Mr. Le Vu, Editor-in-Chief of Vietweekly, USA, said: The Vietnamese community abroad really needs to preserve and develop Vietnamese culture through language. Because Vietnamese culture is closely linked to the customs and traditions of the people that have existed for thousands of years.

Mr. Le Vu suggested that Vietnam should cooperate with other countries to promote the opening of more Vietnamese language classes through summer camps, cultural exchanges, etc.

Also at the workshop, delegates contributed ideas on promoting the role of the press in promoting the image of the country, culture and economy of Vietnam abroad; and information and communication work for the Vietnamese community abroad./.
