In addition to the confirmed meeting with President Putin, Prime Minister Abe also said he would like to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, however there has been no official confirmation of a bilateral meeting.

"In these contacts, I plan to emphasize the importance of discussing solutions to the escalating situation surrounding North Korea's nuclear and missile programs," said Shinzo Abe.

This will be the second time Mr Moon and Mr Xi have met in person. Their first bilateral meeting was on July 6 in Berlin, ahead of the G20 Summit.

The meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Moon Jae-in is also highly anticipated by observers as it takes place in the context of the two countries making efforts to reduce tensions surrounding the US THAAD defense system in South Korea.
