Playing in the rain with thunder and lightning can be life-threatening for players.

The incident occurred during a friendly match between two semi-professional football teams in Nuevo Fatima, a town in northeastern Argentina.

It was raining during the match. Then lightning struck 21-year-old player Fernando Ruiz Díaz.

According to the Clarin newspaper, the victim died almost immediately after being struck by lightning due to the high current. Six other players were also injured and had to be taken to hospital.

This is not the first time that nature has unleashed its fury on a football match in recent times. Last December, during a third-round match in the Peruvian Cup, lightning struck and injured a player and an assistant referee.

In 2012, two young American soccer players were killed by lightning while taking shelter under a tree. The players had been playing soccer on a nearby field when it started to rain.

In 2006, a 17-year-old Danish player also died when he was struck by lightning during an amateur match.
