Having just finished watching the spectacular fireworks display celebrating France's National Day, Nguyen Trung Duc saw people panicking in the distance.

"I was standing on the sidewalk near the Meridien Hotel when I heard the police shouting: Run, run. Even though I didn't understand what was going on, I saw people rushing in and I followed," Duc, 25, a master's student at Skema Business School, told VnExpress about the moment the truck crashed into the crowd last night.

Standing from a distance, the student could still see the huge white truck rushing into the crowd at great speed. People screamed, warning others to get away from the scene, but those standing on the street had to push each other because there were so many people. Duc was also pushed but luckily he was not injured.

Witnessing the scene of people running in all directions towards Massena Square, the old town of Vieux-Nice and the flower market Course Salaya, some people running while looking for lost children, some people running into nearby restaurants and hotels to hide, Duc also felt panic. He quickly ran home, the apartment complex was more than a kilometer away from the scene of the attack. Here, Duc met some Vietnamese friends, everyone asked each other continuously, watching the news, they knew this was a terrorist attack. The truck contained guns and ammunition, it took the police a while to stop the vehicle.

"Since the attack in Paris last November, I have been worried, but I honestly never thought Nice would be like this," Duc said.

By early morning, Duc's family and friends in Vietnam kept calling to ask about the situation, and he had to reassure everyone.

After police killed the driver and treated the injured, the situation in Nice gradually returned to normal, with the streets becoming quieter. Duc said the Promenade des Anglais was blocked and security was tightened.

Nice Matin, the official newspaper of the city of Nice, now has a special section dedicated to finding missing or uncontacted people.

As Vice President of the Vietnamese Student Association in Nice, Duc said the Association is always ready to support members when any bad situation occurs.

"On behalf of you, I would like to send my condolences to the families of the victims and hope that Nice will soon be strong again," Duc said.
