Sir Alex defends Man United's shocking defeat

Defending Manchester United's shock 0-1 defeat to Wigan at DW, manager Alex Ferguson publicly said the referee made a big mistake.

The Scottish strategist was extremely upset when talking about the situation where Figueroa let the ball touch his hand in the penalty area, but the referee team, especially the linesman, did not see it even though he was in a very favorable position.

"It was a disappointing night for the refereeing team," said Sir Alex. "Figueroa handled the ball in the box and the referee, who was standing nearby, didn't see it. He should have seen it more closely to make the right decision."

The strategist also said that in the situation leading to Maloney's goal, Manchester United should have been awarded a goal kick instead of a corner kick.

"We should have had a goal kick, not a corner kick. Phil Jones had no contact with the ball. Referee Phil Dowd did not follow the situation closely and relied too much on his assistant, so he could not give his own view," coach Ferguson emphasized.

Although criticizing the referee, Sir Alex also had to admit that Wigan deserved their first win against Manchester United since the team was promoted to the Premier League in 2005. "Wigan played better than us and deserved to win."/.
