Slovenia ready to open its doors to 10,000 refugees

(Baonghean.vn)- According to the latest statement made in Germany on July 19, Marta Kos Marko - representative of Slovenia announced that the country is ready to welcome more than 10,000 refugees if they apply for asylum in Slovenia.

The Rheinische Post reported that Marta Kos Marko stated that Slovenia would welcome and protect asylum seekers. Ms Marko said that Slovenia has the capacity to do so and can take in up to 10,000 refugees. However, if the number of asylum seekers exceeds this number, Slovenia will be forced to seek help from the European Union.

Ms. Marko assured that Slovenia would act in accordance with the provisions of the Schengen and Dublin treaties. In addition, the Slovenian ambassador shared that the people of Slovenia had experienced the Yugoslav war in 1991 and were helped by countries such as Austria and Italy when they were forced to leave their homes. Therefore, Slovenia felt a responsibility to help refugees.

Marko's comments come as Slovenia, a country of 2 million people, struggles with a surge of migrants on its territory. On September 17, Slovenia suspended rail traffic with Croatia after a group of 150 migrants attempted to board a train to Zurich. On September 18, Slovenian authorities confirmed that more than 1,000 migrants were on its territory, while another 700 were at the Obrezje border crossing, 20 km east of the capital.
