The figures come as racial tensions continue to escalate in the United States. On Sunday, May 10, two Mississippi police officers were murdered by four men at a traffic stop. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, who is also black, expressed shock and horror at the incident.
The reason for this situation is the recent blunders of the American police that have resulted in the deaths of several black people. This has further strained the relationship between white police and African Americans, especially in the two cities of Baltimore and Ferguson.
FBI Director James Comey also acknowledged that the relationship between police and the community is particularly difficult. Mr. Comey called for people to "heal the divide" and expressed gratitude to police officers - who have devoted all to ensuring safety for society.
The report estimates that as many as 20,000 police officers across the country are at risk of personal injury. In response, Attorney General Loretta Lynch has promised to “continue to do everything we can to protect our officers and support those in uniform.”
