Fearing toxic Chinese goods, Vietnamese consumers are turning back to Thai goods. This Tet, many people have returned to Thai consumer goods that were considered luxury goods nearly two decades ago.

While choosing to buy some plastic slippers to wear indoors at the 2014 Thai Goods Retail Fair in Hanoi (Hanoi), Mr. Tran Cao Khanh (Hai Ba Trung) said that in the past few years, instead of choosing to buy Chinese products, his family has gradually switched to choosing products originating from Thailand.

According to Mr. Khanh, in the past, the family often chose to buy Thai household goods and cosmetics, but now they also choose many other items such as candy, fashion, etc. Comparing the design, safety, and price with Chinese, Korean, or EU products, Thai products are a good choice.

“In particular, with the news that Chinese plastic sandals contain many toxic substances, my family immediately turned to buying Thai sandals with similar designs because in addition to guaranteed quality, the durability of the sandals is also considered to be better,” said Mr. Khanh.

Ms. Nguyen Nhu Binh in Cat Linh (Dong Da) also said: "Compared to Chinese goods, Thai goods are also rated higher in terms of quality. For example, Thai plastic trays often have more beautiful designs, look more luxurious than Vietnamese goods, and the purchase price is only equal or a few thousand dong more, not much."

According to Ms. Binh, in her house currently, over 60% of household products, cosmetics, etc. come from Thailand.

The owner of a supermarket specializing in Thai products on Nguyen Cong Tru Street (Hai Ba Trung) sells all kinds of products from shower gel, shampoo, hair conditioner, candy, detergent, household items, cutlery, clothes, shoes to the smallest items such as toilet paper, brooms, salt, spices, cups and bowls... and is always crowded with customers until night.

The shop owner shared that in addition to the cosmetics and household items that people have chosen in the past, recently Thai spices, food, and confectionery have also been very popular. The number of people opening shops specializing in Thai food in Hanoi has increased significantly in the past year.

In fact, thanks to winning the hearts of many consumers, Thai products are returning to the Vietnamese market. Where nearly 20 years ago, Thai products were considered a popular luxury.

Thai products are now not only available in large supermarkets but also on many streets such as Tay Son, Le Trong Tan, Cau Giay, Nga Tu So, Nguyen Cong Tru, Giang Vo, Doi Can... mini supermarkets specializing in Thai products are also springing up more and more. The selling price of Thai products is generally higher than Chinese products, but compared to Vietnamese products, the price is equivalent, many products are cheaper than Vietnamese products.

This Tet holiday, in addition to the main products that have had advantages from before, Thai products have also started to return with confectionery, drinks, consumer goods, etc. Even incense is sold quite commonly. This proves that the invasion and expansion of Thai products in the Vietnamese market is increasingly clear and attracts many customers to choose.

Ms. Nguyen Luu Ly (Kham Thien, Dong Da) shared, going to Thai supermarkets, it is easy to see that household items are very abundant, buyers can find anything they need. From knives, scissors, dishwashing sponges to spice packets or products costing millions such as induction cookers, rice cookers... In general, Thai products sold in Vietnam are not lacking in anything, even incense used in worshiping are also of Thai origin.

Mr. Dinh The Toan (Truong Dinh, Hoang Mai) said: not only that, in addition to beautiful designs, rich variety, and affordable prices, Vietnamese consumers also receive thoughtful care and advice when choosing products.

In fact, compared to Chinese consumer goods, products from Thailand are 20-30% more expensive, and compared to goods imported from Japan, Korea, etc., Thai goods are cheaper. Because of this, Thai goods are very popular in Vietnam.

Chairwoman of the Vietnam Retailers Association, Ms. Dinh Thi My Loan said: "Thai goods have an advantage over Chinese goods in Vietnam. They will even overwhelm Vietnamese goods if Vietnamese enterprises do not quickly build retail and distribution systems and improve product quality."
