The Department of Health requested Thai An Hospital to review its medical examination and treatment work.
(Baonghean.vn) - After Nghe An newspaper published on November 17, 2011, published an article: "A hasty decision to perform surgery" at Thai An General Hospital (Vinh City), Nghe An Department of Health issued a document requesting Thai An General Hospital to provide an explanation report; at the same time, on November 21, 2011, a delegation led by the Head of the Medical Affairs Department came to work directly at Thai An General Hospital to clarify the incident reported by the newspaper. Based on the inspection results, the Department of Health issued Document No. 2357/SYT-NVY dated December 20, 2011 in response to the incident reported by Nghe An newspaper:
The patient who underwent surgery at Thai An Hospital was Ms. Nguyen Thi Thiet (49 years old), in Son Le commune, Huong Son, Ha Tinh, with health insurance, the reason for admission was an epigastric tumor; the preoperative diagnosis was a small curvature ulcer to monitor gastric cancer; the postoperative diagnosis was a tumor under the right liver, above the head of the pancreas, invading the gastric antrum. Medical history and treatment: The patient had health insurance but voluntarily went to Thai An General Hospital for examination and treatment. The patient was examined, had biochemical tests of blood, urine, electrocardiogram and diagnostic imaging for endoscopy, abdominal ultrasound, and chest X-ray.
Because the diagnosis was made as above before the surgery, the hospital had a consultation and was assigned to surgically resect the stomach and remove the lymph nodes. Through studying the medical records and working directly with the hospital leaders and related doctors, the Department of Health has the following opinion: The patient was diagnosed with gastric curvature ulcer suspected to be caused by cancer but did not undergo testing, which is not enough scientific basis for diagnosis and determination to help prescribe appropriate treatment for the condition.
However, when performing abdominal surgery, a tumor was discovered from under the right liver, above the head of the pancreas, invading the stomach antrum. Realizing that this was a technique beyond the expertise of the specialist, if intervention was carried out, it would endanger the patient's life. The surgical team held a consultation and decided not to intervene in the tumor and informed the family about the patient's condition. The patient's abdomen was closed, treated stably, and discharged from the hospital.
From this incident, the Department of Health directed Thai An Hospital to seriously review and promptly review the work of medical examination and treatment, especially in consultation for diagnosis and treatment. When exceeding professional capacity, it is necessary to consult with inter-hospitals (Provincial General Hospital, Provincial Specialized Hospital...) to ensure the safety of life and rights of patients.
The Department of Health sincerely thanks Nghe An Newspaper and hopes to receive more news and articles reflecting all activities of the health sector to continuously improve the quality of medical examination and treatment and protect and care for people's health.
