Nowadays, cornus officinalis is used to treat impotence, frequent urination,... and also to treat malaria with simple remedies.

Oriental medicine believes that cornel has a sour taste, neutral properties, and enters the qi of the two meridians of the liver and kidney. It has the function of nourishing the liver and kidney, and replenishing vital energy, so it is used as a tonic medicine such as expelling wind and cold, numbness and rheumatism, treating heat and cold, eliminating headaches and stuffy nose; especially used as a tonic, nourishing essence, and clearing the orifices. In ancient medical books, it is said that it has a sour, waxy taste, and slightly warm properties, enters the meridians of the liver and kidney, waxy properties, and only cold, which means making the temperament strong and preventing sweating. It is effective in treating spermatorrhea, seminal emission, frequent urination, irregular menstruation, or night sweats. The average daily dose for decoction or wine soaking or combined with other ingredients is 6 - 12g.

Nowadays, cornus officinalis is used according to ancient experience such as the formula of Luc Vi or Luc Vi Dia Hoang to treat the symptoms of weak sperm and qi, frequent urination, tinnitus and deafness due to weak kidneys in old age; yellow eyes due to weak liver. According to new research results, cornus officinalis is also used to treat malaria, used as an astringent and tonic.

For reference and application, below are some kidney tonics that use cornus officinalis.

- Use the Shan Thu Du Hoan method (Thai Binh Thanh Hue method).Has the effect of nourishing the kidney, warming yang, benefiting essence; treating tuberculosis, cold knees, weak legs, frequent urination, loss of appetite. The formula includes: 40g of Morinda officinalis, 40g of Atractylodes Rhizome, 40g of Polygala tenuifolia, 1.2g of Schisandra chinensis, 60g of Achyranthes bidentata, 1.2g of Cinnamon bark, 40g of Raspberry, 40g of Cornus officinalis, 40g of Atractylodes Rhizome (roots removed), 40g of Atractylodes Rhizome (roasted, peeled, and stemmed), 80g of Cistanche deserticola, 60g of Rehmannia glutinosa, 40g of Atractylodes Rhizome, 40g of Atractylodes Rhizome. Grind into powder, add honey and make pills. Take 12g each time with warm wine. Twice a day.

- Cornus officinalis wine (in "Pharmacological wine test recipe").Has the effect of nourishing the Liver and Kidney, warming the back and knees, calming the mind, stabilizing the will, nourishing the brain, nourishing the essence; treating liver and kidney damage, dizziness, tinnitus, forgetfulness, back pain, weak legs, cold hands and feet. The formula includes: Morinda officinalis 30g, Poria cocos 30g, Eucommia ulmoides (roasted) 40g, Schisandra chinensis 35g, Achyranthes bidentata 30g, Eucommia ulmoides 60g, Dioscorea 25g, Cornus officinalis 30g, Cistanche deserticola 30g, Rehmannia glutinosa 30g, Alisma orientale 30g, Polygala tenuifolia 30g.

How to prepare:Crush all the above ingredients, then soak in 4 liters of high-quality rice wine (40 - 45 degrees). In spring and summer, soak for 5 days before use; in autumn and winter, soak for 7 - 10 days before use. The longer the soaking, the better.

Use:Drink 2-3 times a day before meals, 1-2 small cups each time, about 25-30ml.
