"I have always felt proud of every minute I have worn the England shirt. This is a really sad day for me. I have consulted some close friends and teammates. This is the most difficult decision for me since I played professionally at the age of 18" - Gerrard said.
According to BBC, the main reason for Gerrard's decision was the poor performance of the "Three Lions" at the 2014 World Cup. Besides, at the age of 34, Gerrard felt he no longer had enough strength to continue contributing to the national team.
Saying goodbye to the England team, Gerrard will devote all his energy to contributing to Liverpool club, where he has been attached since 1998.
At the 2014 World Cup, Gerrard was trusted by coach Roy Hodgson to be given the captain's armband. However, his performance in the last two matches of the group stage made England fans wonder about Gerrard's ability to continue contributing. Many fans and experts have suggested that Gerrard should leave the team to give opportunities to younger players.
Despite Hodgson's statement that he still needs Gerrard in the tactical scheme of the English team, the midfielder currently playing for Liverpool still decided to say goodbye.
During his professional football career, Gerrard played 114 matches for the "Three Lions", scoring 21 goals. Gerrard attended the World Cup twice and the EURO three times./.
