Steven Gerrard is the best player in England

Midfielder Steven Gerrard has been voted England's best player of 2012 by the Football Association (FA). The vote was held on the official website of the Association.

According to the announced results, the captain of Liverpool club surpassed two teammates in the national team, striker Danny Welbeck of Manchester United and defender Ashley Cole of Chelsea.

Gerrard also set a record for the number of votes cast - 180,000 - since the award was established in 2003 with David Beckham's first title win.

With this prestigious award, the Three Lions midfielder has equaled Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney to become the only player to win this prestigious award twice. Previously, Gerrard was also honored in 2007.

During the award ceremony, Steven Gerrard shared: "I am happy to be voted England's best player. Every time I wear the England shirt, I am really proud of this."

Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson was also named the best player under 21. Stephanie Houghton of Arsenal Women's Football Team was named the best player in the women's category. The 2012 World Team of the Year award went to the Great Britain Women's National Team.
