Streptomycin can cause deafness, hearing loss
Like other antibiotics, streptomycin causes unwanted effects: Ototoxicity, damage to the cochlear nerve and damage to the vestibular nerve causing dizziness.
For the ear, the possibility of vestibular toxicity is higher in children than in adults. In patients with normal renal function, the main factors related to toxicity are the daily dose and the total treatment dose over a certain period of time. The higher the daily dose and the longer the treatment, the greater the side effects on the ear (reduced hearing and vestibular complications...).
In addition, the drug also causes visual disturbances (occurring in 50% of cases), paresthesia (usually occurring around the mouth and also in other areas of the face and hands), and peripheral neuritis.
Allergic reactions may include skin rash (occurring in 5% of patients 7-9 days after the first injection), erythema, fever, urticaria, Quincke's edema. Some patients may experience partial or complete loss of smell (after long-term treatment), neuritis, myelitis and other neurological complications.... When unwanted reactions to this drug appear, treatment with streptomycin should be stopped immediately.
When using the drug, it is important to note: Initially and periodically perform hot and cold stimulation tests in the ear and check hearing when using streptomycin for a long time. When there are signs of tinnitus, ringing in the ears or deafness in the ears, it is necessary to check hearing or end the treatment or both. Be careful with people using streptomycin to avoid skin hypersensitivity reactions that usually appear in the 2nd and 3rd weeks.
As with all intramuscular preparations, streptomycin should be injected only into large muscles and with care to minimize the possibility of peripheral nerve damage... Because the drug can cause fetal damage (causing deafness in the child later), it should not be used in pregnant women.
