The sustainability of goiter eradication targets in Nghe An is under threat.
(Baonghean)-The investigation results of Nghe An Endocrinology Hospital in 2 years (2011 - 2012) show that: The sustainability of the indicators of Goiter and CRLTI clearance in the whole province is seriously threatened if there is no timely intervention solution, specifically the following indicators:
- BC rate of 8-10 year old students = 1.80% (2005 = 1.2%, requirement <>
- Iodized salt coverage = 90.6% (2005 = 96.5%, requirement >= 90%).
- Median urinary iodine level = 10.1 mcg/dl (2005 = 18.0 mcg/dl, required 10 - 20 mcg/dl).
The payment results in 2005 were maintained until 2009. Since 2010, especially at the end of 2010, the above indicators and some other factors have tended to gradually decrease, approaching the lowest boundary, moving to the stage of mild iodine deficiency (especially after a period of time when the State abandoned the subsidy regime on supporting production prices and transportation costs of iodine to mountainous areas).
Reasons: + Lack of distribution network, supplying MI for people to buy and use when needed;
+ Due to lack of KIO3 to mix into salt, there is a lack of MI and iodine products supplied to people;
+ An equally important reason is that the socialization work as prescribed by the Government in Decree 163/ND-CP dated December 29, 2005 has not been maintained regularly, and has even gradually faded away since the completion of the payment target by the end of 2005.
Therefore, our basic and long-term professional measure to prevent iodine deficiency disorders is to supplement iodine to the bodies of Vietnamese people in general and Nghe An in particular through MI and iodine preparations such as iodized seasoning powder and iodized fish sauce.
