According to a research report in the journal Scientific Reports, to find out the cause of dandruff, a team of experts from Shanghai Jiaotong University took scalp samples from people aged 18-60.

Dandruff has long been blamed on a fungus called Malassezia, but researchers found that the fungus was common in all scalp samples and that the levels of infection did not change in people with or without dandruff.

But the bacteria on their scalps told a different story. People with dandruff had higher levels of Staphylococcus bacteria and lower levels of Propionibacterium bacteria on their scalps than people without the condition. The scalps of people with dandruff were also drier and less oily.

The research team believes that regulating the balance of bacteria on the scalp, especially by increasing Propionibacterium and inhibiting Staphylococcus, could be a potential solution in eliminating dandruff.

Commenting on the study, Dr. Bernie Hudson of the University of Sydney (Australia) expressed caution: "Simply changing the concentration of one type of bacteria compared to another type of bacteria may not be a cure, because there may be other microorganisms that also have important effects. However, this is certainly a good start."
