In his Testament, President Ho Chi Minh emphasized that thanks to close solidarity and wholehearted service to the working class, the people and the Fatherland, since its founding, our Party has united, organized and led our people to enthusiastically fight from one victory to another.

Unity is a precious tradition of our Party and people. Comrades from the Central Committee to the Party cells need to preserve the unity and consensus of the Party as they preserve the apple of their eye.

The strength of national unity has helped Vietnam achieve peace.

From the perspective of historical research, Historian Duong Trung Quoc believes that President Ho Chi Minh's Testament emphasizes the strength of great national unity. Unity within the Party and national unity are extraordinary strengths that help our country overcome great and difficult challenges to achieve the peace we have today.

The great national unity was also an extraordinary force leading to the success of the August Revolution in 1945. The success was not only significant for Vietnam when it ended the colonial regime that existed for nearly 100 years, gaining independence from the Japanese fascists and French colonialists, but also opened up development for the country.

Vietnam's choice of the Democratic Republic - a political institution considered the most advanced - reflected the trend of the times, linking national independence with democracy and the Republican institution.

President Ho Chi Minh had experienced and witnessed the Soviet regime of Russia and the Guangzhou Commune regime, but when the country gained independence, he chose the Democratic Republic regime. That shows that the August Revolution placed Vietnam, though still very young, right on the development trajectory of the times. If we carefully study the policies and guidelines of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, we will see good prospects for development. That policy determined independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, ending the divide and rule regime of the French Empire. In addition, the policies of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam soon opened the door to integrate with other countries in the world.

Although in the years before, during and after the August Revolution in 1945, our country lived under the siege of French colonialism, President Ho Chi Minh and many leaders had a consistent viewpoint: Vietnam advocates being friends with all democratic countries. Vietnam desires peace, independence and democracy. Vietnam is ready to open its doors and invite all countries to invest and develop together for mutual benefit. In addition, since the United Nations was first established, Vietnam has wanted to join this organization with the desire to protect peace and contribute to common peace in the world.

However, because Vietnam did not accept the divide and rule policy of the French Empire and the policy of the “hawks” in the French political circles who wanted to impose a colonial regime on our country, we were forced to oppose their sinister intentions. Later, in the context of the polarized world of the Cold War, the impact of ideological conflicts led our country to oppose the intervention of the American Empire.

The Geneva Agreement in 1954 marked the victory of our army and people in the resistance war against France and the Paris Agreement in 1973 put an end to the intervention of the US Empire. The basic content of the two Agreements was to reaffirm the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a unified Vietnam.

Having gone through many years of arduous war, loss and sacrifice against French colonialism and American imperialism, the Vietnamese people have understood the sacred meaning of the value of peace. Up to now, while living in a world with many complexities, the goal of peace still holds true today. This has proven that when Vietnam is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), it has a role and responsibility to build this Association strong and increasingly developed.

The Party's responsibility towards people's lives

President Ho Chi Minh's Testament also emphasized the role and responsibility of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Within the Party, practicing broad democracy, regularly and seriously self-criticizing and criticizing is the best way to consolidate and develop the solidarity and unity of the Party.

Our Party is a ruling Party. Each Party member and cadre must truly imbue revolutionary ethics, be truly thrifty, honest, impartial and selfless; must keep our Party truly clean, and must be worthy of being a leader and a truly loyal servant of the people.

Historian Duong Trung Quoc said that if we look closely, we see that President Ho Chi Minh not only emphasized the role and responsibility of the Communist Party of Vietnam towards the people's lives in his Testament, but also clearly affirmed this issue at the first meeting of the Provisional Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

President Ho Chi Minh made a very simple but profound statement, as a principle: "If independence and freedom are not enjoyed by the people, it is meaningless." He pointed out that if the people want to enjoy happiness, the ruling Party and Government must have the right guidelines, policies, and capacity to gather the people. President Ho Chi Minh's advice still holds true today when Vietnam has achieved many great achievements in many fields.

In relation to the current situation, President Ho Chi Minh's Testament was published in 1969 as a profound principle for the existence and development of the country.

For a country to have unity, its leaders and Party members must be truly exemplary. The life and happiness of the people is the measure of their trust and satisfaction with the Party and State agencies. This is very suitable and is the standard criterion of modern society as well as the general development trend around the world.

President Ho Chi Minh’s Testament reminded Party and State leaders to take “people as the root” because it is the people who will contribute to deciding the survival and development of the regime and the country. Therefore, the prosperity and happiness of the people must be cared for and nurtured by the Party and State like planting trees.
