When the incident happened, Ms. Marois was taken off the stage by bodyguards, but just a few minutes later, she returned and quickly finished her speech.

Ms Marois's Quebec party supports secession from mostly English-speaking Canada, but has been reluctant to pursue independence because voters are seen as more interested in ousting former Premier Charest than independence.

Just before the shooting, Ms. Marois declared that Quebec's future would be as a sovereign country./.
