In this study, scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital for Children and Johns Hopkins University in the US discovered that the chemical sulforaphane found in cruciferous vegetables such as spinach, cauliflower, cabbage... can help autistic people calm down and integrate better.

Scientists conducted a trial with 44 male adolescents aged 13 to 27 with moderate to severe autism. These people were randomly given a drug containing sulforaphane or a placebo every day for 4 weeks. Of the 40 people who responded after the trial, 26 people using the drug containing sulforaphane had significant improvements in behavior compared to those using the placebo. Co-author of the study, Professor Andrew Zimmerman said the level of integration of autistic people using the drug containing sulforaphane improved significantly compared to the group that did not use it.

Previous autism medications have targeted specific aspects of controlling symptoms such as hyperactivity, aggression, and sleep problems. Scientists hope this new research will open up new directions in the development of drugs containing sulforaphane to help autistic people increase their ability to integrate and communicate socially.

In 1992, scientists first discovered that sulforaphane could help protect the body against stress, inflammation, and DNA damage. People with autism tend to suffer from various cellular abnormalities, including inflammation and DNA damage./.
