Students of the University of Transport compete in anti-traffic jam plan for Hanoi
Many new, unique and highly feasible intersection designs appeared at the final round of the 2013 Future Bridge Engineer Competition.
On April 7, the final round of the 3rd Future Bridge Engineer Competition took place at Hanoi University of Transport (UT) with the participation of 15 teams.
Traffic congestion has been and is one of the most pressing issues that Hanoi city has to face every day. Designing and constructing traffic intersections that are sustainable, technically and aesthetically pleasing, and that solve traffic congestion problems is one of the most important issues today.
CompetitionFuture Bridge Engineer 3rd time”with the theme: "Traffic intersection design - Relieving traffic congestion in Hanoi" attracted the participation of full-time students from technical schools in Hanoi who study design and construction subjects (University of Transport, University of Construction, University of Water Resources, Phuong Dong University, University of Architecture, Military Technical Academy, University of Transport Technology and other universities and colleges...).
The topics given by the Expert Council are all key traffic intersections in Hanoi such as: Ngoc Hoi - Phan Trong Tue - Van Dien cemetery intersection; Giang Vo - Cat Linh intersection; Voi Phuc - Kim Ma - De La Thanh intersection; Kim Ma - Lieu Giai - Nguyen Chi Thanh intersection; Truong Trinh - Ton That Tung intersection... With the motto, the design of traffic intersections must ensure economic, technical, architectural criteria, suitable for the characteristics of urban and traffic in Hanoi, paying special attention to issues related to the general planning of Hanoi in the future.
After 4 months of intensive preparation for the competition with stages such as: Analyzing, surveying the current status of the intersection and the need for redesign, proposing design solutions, building models... 15 best teams were present at the final round with 15 designed and completed intersection models.
In addition to the teams' presentation of ideas, the teams also faced criticism on their ideas, structural and architectural solutions, etc. from experts in the field of traffic construction, making the final round of the competition even more exciting.
Ideas such as the overpass combining two tunnels to form a "Diamond Button", the bridge with the symbol of a peacock... show the creativity and spirit of constant learning of students.
Nguyen Thanh Hai, lecturer of Roads, Faculty of Construction - Hanoi University of Transport shared: "This is a practical playground for students. Many architectural and technical ideas about traffic works have been proposed, making us surprised by the creativity and knowledge base of the students. Their designs can be proposed to the Ministry of Transport to find new design solutions to relieve traffic congestion at key intersections in Hanoi."
The representative of the Organizing Committee of the competition said: The Organizing Committee highly appreciates creative architectural ideas and designs with high aesthetic value. In addition, choosing feasible structural solutions, choosing the most easily available and cheapest materials, bringing the highest efficiency to the bridge... are also very important factors.
Surpassing many unique and beautiful designs, with reasonable structure and high feasibility, the design designed and constructed by team KS54 of Road class K51 - University of Transport was honored to receive first prize. With the novel design idea of "Diamond Button", and being able to take advantage of the old planning, team KS 54 has come up with a reasonable solution for the key traffic intersection of Kim Ma - Nguyen Chi Thanh.
Nguyen Minh Anh (Hanoi University of Architecture) shared: “One of the causes of traffic jams is that the infrastructure has not kept up with the increase in the number of vehicles, so one of the solutions to prevent traffic jams is to build and design suitable intersections. Therefore, this is truly a practical, interesting, creative and intellectual playground for students - future bridge engineers”./.

The designs submitted by students to the contest can be suggestions for future traffic construction projects in Hanoi.
The "Diamond Button" design was honored with first prize.
