With the project "Design of a propulsion system for an 8-seat river passenger boat using solar energy", the group of students Vuong Hoang Nguyen and Tran Nguyen Kim Luan (Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology) won the first prize in the program "Award for excellent scientific research projects of VNU students" in 2013.

With the aim of providing a new technical solution for ship operation, two students Vuong Hoang Nguyen and Tran Nguyen Kim Luan (Department of Ships, Faculty of Transport Engineering, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology) came up with the idea of designing a ship engine that runs on solar energy.

Talking about the reason for this initiative, Hoang Nguyen said: “Solar-powered boats have many advantages. They use electric motors so they do not pollute the environment, are quieter and do not make noise. Besides, they are more economical than traditional diesel engines."

To carry out this project, Hoang Nguyen and Kim Luan divided their work. Hoang Nguyen was in charge of the electrical part, calculating the solar panel power. Kim Luan was in charge of designing the details of the power system.

It took the group of students four and a half months to complete the project. At the beginning of the project, the group encountered many difficulties due to lack of funds and tools and equipment to measure and test the ship's engine. The tools needed for the project had to be borrowed or made by themselves.

The ship is designed for eco-tourism areas with lakes or riversides to serve tourism.

The project of Hoang Nguyen and Kim Luan was highly appreciated by the Award Judging Council for its creativity and practicality. Currently, the group has designed a powertrain at a scale of 1/10 compared to reality. The project has been funded and is expected to build a real ship next year.

Sharing his experience in researching similar models, Hoang Nguyen confided: “The element of creativity and exploration in new directions is important in researching topics like this. If you want to find something new, you have to start doing it yourself. You have to learn and try to apply that topic in practice.”
