Syria: Warplanes bomb capital for first time
A Syrian fighter jet carried out its first airstrike on the capital Damascus since the start of the conflict in the country 19 months ago, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on October 30.
"The plane dropped four bombs in the Jobar area, east of the capital Damascus," said SOHR director Rami Abdel Rahman.
An AFP journalist in Damascus said he heard a series of terrifying explosions caused by bombings across the city.

Until now, the army has only used combat helicopters to attack areas in Damascus.
In recent days, the air force has increased its bombing raids by fighter jets on rebel-held areas across Syria.
In a related development on the same day, Syrian state television said that General Abdullah Mahmud al-Khalidi of the country's air force was assassinated in the Rukn al-Din district, north of Damascus, and accused "terrorist groups" of carrying out the murder.
According to a security source, the general was a member of the Syrian Air Force command and was shot dead while leaving a friend's house on the evening of October 29./.
