Mining accident in China, 20 people died

Early on the morning of September 25, at a coal mine in Baiyin city, Gansu province, northwestern China, a mining accident occurred, killing at least 20 people.

According to the Gansu provincial labor safety agency, the accident occurred at 00:25 a.m. (local time), when a tractor and two train cars carrying 34 workers down to the mine derailed, rolled down a slope and overturned.

The overturned train threw all the workers into the mine and by noon on September 25, rescuers had saved 14 workers and brought 20 bodies to the surface.

Most of those rescued are being treated in hospital for injuries.

The above mentioned coal mine is an illegal mine, put into operation since 2003 with an annual coal output of 90,000 tons.
