Horrific accident kills 6 Togo players

November 27, 2011 16:31

At least six soccer players were killed and 28 others injured when the bus carrying them plunged into a ravine and burst into flames.

The accident happened last Saturday near the city of Atakpame, 160km north of the capital Lome (Togo). At that time, the entire Etoile Filante football team was on their way to Sokode to prepare for a match against Semass in the national championship of this country.

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe immediately ordered the victims to be taken to a military hospital in the capital Lome for treatment.

The initial cause of the accident is believed to be a tire explosion, causing the bus to flip over and plunge into a ravine. Some victims were burned to death. Some witnesses said the bus rolled several times before plunging into the ravine.

Goalkeeper Mama Souleyman - one of the lucky survivors said: "I don't know why that terrible accident happened."

Etoile Filante were seven-time national champions and runners-up in the African Club Championship in 1968.

Remember, earlier this year, the bus carrying the Togo national team to Angola to participate in CAN 2010 (Africa Cup) was attacked by an armed group using machine guns. This crazy shooting left the driver dead and 9 others injured, including 2 players.

In 2007, Togo's Sports Minister Richard Attipoe and 21 others died after a plane carrying them crashed in Sierra Leone./.
