Container driver who hit more than 20 motorbikes turns himself in
After about 7 hours of driving a container truck and killing 4 people, driver Pham Thanh Hieu went to Ben Luc Police Station, Long An to present himself to the investigation agency.
Mr. Dang Hoang Tuan - Deputy Director of Long An Department of Transport said that at about 22:30 on January 2, driver Pham Thanh Hieu (32 years old, from Long An) arrived atpresented to the investigation agency. Through inspection, Hieu had a class FC driver's license (container driver's license) issued by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport in 2015.

At around 3:30 p.m., Hieu drove a tractor trailer carrying two containers of rice (20 feet each) from Long An to Ho Chi Minh City. At the Binh Nhut intersection on Highway 1A, near Ben Luc Bridge, the vehicle suddenly swerved past a truck in front and then crashed into the two-wheeled vehicle lane, hitting a series of motorbikes stopped at a red light.
The container continued to roll over and dragged several other motorbikes under it, dragging them for about 150m before stopping. The accident killed 4 people (3 men, 1 woman), injured 16 others, and deformed 21 motorbikes.
When the accident happened, the container truck was traveling at 45 km/h. 10 seconds before, the vehicle's speed was 54 km/h. The accident occurred outside a residential area, the maximum speed of the container truck is 70 km/h.
Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Son, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department of Long An Province, said that the investigation agency will soon initiate a criminal case. "The information that the driver attended a housewarming party and drank alcohol has not been verified by the investigation agency," said Mr. Son.
At a press conference that evening, Deputy Minister of Transport Le Dinh Tho said that before the accident, the vehicle showed no signs of braking. The container truck's inspection was still valid until the end of March, and the vehicle's registered owner was Thanh Duc Company Limited, headquartered more than 1 km from the scene. The Deputy Minister requested that not only the driver be punished, but also the responsibility of the transport business unit be considered.
