Giau said he had to avoid a motorbike so the truck hit a series of other people, but the police determined the cause of the accident was his reckless driving.

On March 9, Go Vap District Police (HCMC) arrested Nguyen Mai Giau (24 years old), the driver of a dump truck that crashed into a series of motorbikes, killing one person and injuring many others, for violating regulations on road traffic control.

According to the investigation, on the night of March 1, Giau drove a dump truck carrying construction materials on Phan Van Tri Street (Go Vap) towards Binh Thanh District at a fairly high speed. Near the Nguyen Thai Son intersection, Giau lost control of the steering wheel, causing the car to crash into the median strip, cross into the opposite lane and hit 6 motorbikes.

Many motorcyclists were thrown off their bikes, while others were dragged under the car. Giau panicked and fled the scene.

Local residents tried to rescue the victims and take them to the hospital, but the 28-year-old man died. Police determined that two others were seriously injured.

When he presented himself a day later, Giau said that "he was trying to avoid a motorbike coming out of the alley, causing the accident." However, based on the evidence at the scene, the police said that Giau's statement was incorrect, and that the accident was caused by him speeding and losing control of the vehicle.
