On August 23, authorities announced that a man with a knife killed two people and seriously injured another in Trappes, a suburb of Paris. The attacker was later shot dead by police.
The incident occurred at around 10am on Camille Claudel Street. The attacker, identified as a bus driver born in 1982, attacked three people on the street before running into a shop. Local police opened fire, seriously injuring him and he died a short time later.
Police are currently investigating the motive for the attack. Speaking to Le Monde, a cautious police officer said, “The perpetrator was known to the victims. At least two of the women were members of his family. The hypothesis that this was an attack due to a family dispute is being considered by the police.” According to another source from AFP, the two women who died were the perpetrator’s mother and sister.
It was previously reported that the perpetrator shouted “Allahu Akbar” (a phrase used by many terrorists when carrying out attacks) before rushing at the victims. However, the police force that received the case seemed to be investigating in the direction that this was not a terrorist incident.
Notably, less than an hour after the incident was announced, the self-proclaimed Islamic State organization IS claimed responsibility for the attack through its Amaq propaganda channel.
