The sugarcane area spread in Tan Hop, Tan Xuan, Giai Xuan, Nghia Hoan... of Tan Ky since 2010 has been affected by grass shoot disease on over 200 hectares, many areas are heavily infected with 20% of the area compared to the field area. Mr. Nguyen Van Dieu's family in Ke Mui - Giai Xuan has 15 hectares of sugarcane, he said that he has applied pesticides recommended by Nghe An Plant Protection Department but it was not effective. Based on experience, he sprinkled more lime powder during the soil treatment process before planting sugarcane (about 500 kg/ha), the effect is that his newly planted sugarcane area is no longer affected by grass shoot disease. Many other families saw this and followed suit and as a result, the sugarcane grew better, reaching a yield of 70-80 tons/ha.

From the experience of the farmers, combined with the method of fertilization and prevention, Song Con Sugar Company has supported sugarcane growers with severe grass shoot disease in Tan Ky with 500 kg/ha of lime powder, 2000 kg/ha of organic microbial complex fertilizer to plant new sugarcane, and at the same time requested farmers to destroy all areas of heavily infected sugarcane and replant to avoid spreading the disease. As for areas with mild infection, farmers are required to destroy diseased sugarcane clumps, the company supports 300 VND/clump.
Mr. Truong Hai Ho, a long-time sugarcane grower in Tan Ky, said that plowing deeply, removing all old sugarcane stumps and burning them all is also a way to limit grass shoot disease. After digging up all the old sugarcane stumps, spread lime powder on top and harrow thoroughly before planting new sugarcane. When planting new sugarcane, do not take the stumps but only use the tops of the sugarcane or the upper half of the plant to plant, while the lower part is the fleshy sugarcane, which also limits grass shoot disease.
Mr. Nguyen Ba Quy - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Song Con Sugar Company said: The factory is ready to lend lime to farmers at a rate of 5-8 quintals/ha to treat grass shoots. Based on the grass shoot disease treatment process and sugarcane planting process, agricultural officers guide sugarcane growing units and individuals to strictly implement. If sugarcane growers do not properly control grass shoots, the price of infected sugarcane will be deducted by 20% compared to the price set by the Company at that time.
Currently, Tan Ky has treated 160 hectares of diseased sugarcane, most of which have been destroyed and replanted. However, the method of preventing and killing the weed bud disease with high concentration of lime powder in Tan Ky when planting sugarcane has shown clear effectiveness and has been recognized by farmers.
