New Japanese Prime Minister Will Not Negotiate on Senkaku

On December 17, Mr. Shinzo Abe, who is about to become the new prime minister of Japan, declared that there can be no compromise on the sovereignty of the islands that are at the center of the dispute between this country and China.

"The Senkaku Islands are Japan's long-standing territory," he asserted of the islands, which Beijing calls Diaoyu. "Japan owns and controls these islands... under international law. There is no room for negotiation on this point."

Mr. Abe led the Liberal Democratic Party to a convincing victory in the December 16 election and throughout the campaign, he took a tough stance on the above dispute.

The LDP has pledged to "study" proposals to build a port on the Senkakus or send government officials there to assert Japan's control over the strategically important but long-uninhabited islands.

Tokyo and Beijing have been locked in a bitter dispute for decades over sovereignty over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, and the dispute intensified after Japan nationalized the islands in September this year.

Japan accused Chinese ships of repeatedly entering its territorial waters and last week, for the first time, a Chinese plane entered the airspace above the islands, forcing Japan to scramble fighter jets./.
