The incident took place in the 42nd minute of a friendly match in Brazil. The 40-year-old former player was said to have made a half-provocative, half-flirty gesture towards the female linesman Ericles Artuzi when the flag was raised for offside. Immediately, the main referee, also a woman, ran to warn Denilson and warned him that if he did it again, he would be sent off the field.
The star was once the world's most expensive player when he moved from Sao Paulo to Real Betis for £21.5m in 1997 at the age of 20. Denilson was also in the Brazil squad for the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, the year the Selecao won the world championship.
When his form declined, the 40-year-old former star went to Bordeaux and FC Dallas before making a splash by playing for Hai Phong Cement in 2009. Denilson ended his career in the Greek third division, playing for Nea Kavala FC.
