Strengthening measures to prevent diabetes and iodine deficiency disorders

In 2012, the coverage of iodized salt and iodine preparations (MI) reached 90.6%; the rate of 8-10 year old students with goiter decreased to 1.23%; the rate of people with full awareness of the harmful effects of iodine deficiency was 91.5%. In particular, last year, the Provincial Endocrinology Hospital conducted an epidemiological investigation to implement the provincial-level project "Research to propose solutions to reduce the rate of goiter in students aged 8-10", 3,000 students were clinically examined combined with ultrasound, iodine quantification and 3,000 women were interviewed, salt quantification was taken. Thereby, the risk of rapidly increasing disorders due to iodine deficiency was determined. Currently, the rate of goiter in mountainous areas tends to increase compared to before by 1.8% (in 2006 it was 1.25%); MI coverage and median urinary iodine level in the delta and coastal areas gradually decreased from 95% and 16.4mcg/dl in 2005 to 90.6% and 10.1mcg/dl in 2012.

The project's goal in 2013 is to have 50% of people in the community have correct understanding of diabetes; 50% of staff will be trained to implement preventive measures, early detection, management and treatment of at-risk subjects and people with diabetes; and strive for 50% of people with pre-diabetes to receive intervention.
