Strengthening inspection of aquatic food safety

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, from September 16, seafood production and trading establishments that have registered food business lines in their Business Registration Certificates according to current regulations of Vietnam and fishing vessels with main engine capacity of 50 CV or more will have to undergo state inspection and certification of food quality and safety, according to regulations of Vietnam and the importing country.

The content of the inspection of food safety conditions of the facility includes the conditions of facilities, equipment and people directly involved in production and business in ensuring food safety of aquatic products; quality management program and product traceability procedures.

For export shipments requiring quarantine certification according to current regulations, the inspection agency will simultaneously conduct quality, food safety and quarantine inspections. Accordingly, samples will be taken to verify the effectiveness of the facility's self-control of food safety when necessary.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is also drafting a decision on promulgating measures to strengthen quality control and food safety of seafood shipments exported to Canada and Japan.

According to the draft, for trading companies (shippers), in addition to registering for inspection and certification of quality and food safety of exported aquatic products according to regulations, exporting enterprises must provide additional sales contracts for the shipment between the shipper and the production facility of the shipment.
