Boost your memory with... turmeric

Several previous studies have shown that adding just one gram of the spice turmeric to your breakfast can help improve memory in people who are in the early stages of diabetes and at risk of dementia.

Recently, Australian scientists also said that antioxidant compounds in turmeric used in curries can prevent the progression of dementia or reduce its effects.

Dr. Mark Wahlqvist from Monash University (Australia), who led the study, said they monitored the memory of a group of Taiwanese women aged 60 and over who were diagnosed with prediabetes but were not receiving treatment.

Study participants received one gram of turmeric powder with breakfast, and scientists found that this modest turmeric supplement improved memory in older adults with prediabetes.

Their memories work efficiently and they are particularly flexible in cognitive tasks such as planning, problem solving and reasoning, says Dr. Wahlqvist.

Turmeric is widely used in cooking, especially in Asia. Its characteristic yellow color comes from curcumin, and it has been shown to reduce the risk of many diseases.
