(Baonghean) - In nearly a month, the 10th grade entrance exam and the National High School Exam will take place. These are important exams, so in addition to completing the textbook program, during this time, schools are focusing on reviewing, consolidating, and systematizing knowledge for students.

This year, Hanh Lam Secondary School (Thanh Chuong) has only 60 students in grade 9. Right from the beginning of the school year, the school has proactively implemented the exam review work. The three compulsory subjects, Literature, Math, and English, have been given the most time to review. In addition to the regular teaching hours in class from mid-March until now, on average, each subject has at least one extra tutoring session in the afternoon. Mr. Tran Kim Cuong, Principal of Hanh Lam Secondary School, said: "To make the review effective, we arrange teachers with experience in teaching grade 9 students, helping students closely follow and master the knowledge standards. During the teaching process, teachers require students to apply knowledge systematically, without the need to learn new content or go beyond the curriculum."

Compared to previous years, the entrance exam for grade 10 in Thanh Chuong this year has certain changes. If in the past, Thanh Chuong 1 High School had the largest number of registered students, this year students are more concentrated in neighboring schools such as Dang Thuc Hua High School, Nguyen Sy Sach High School, Thanh Chuong 3 High School, Nguyen Canh Chan High School. There are schools with a rate of student applications exceeding the quota by 100 - 200 students.

Explaining this, Mr. Phan Ba Tien, Principal of Thanh Chuong 3 High School, said: There are two reasons. First, the Department of Education and Training issued a new regulation that does not allow students to register their second choice right in the first application, making them worried. Therefore, only students with good academic performance dare to apply to top schools, the rest only apply to middle-level schools. Besides, it must be seen that the quality of teaching and learning between high schools in the area is getting shorter and shorter, so students are not too particular about which school to study, but they often choose schools near their home, convenient for them to travel to study.

Currently, all 6 high schools in Yen Thanh district have proposed an entrance exam instead of a review because the number of applications submitted to the school is higher than the assigned quota, in which the school with the most applications is Bac Yen Thanh High School. This year, the enrollment quota of Phan Dang Luu High School is 13 classes with 520 students. However, the number of application files is over 700 sets. Mr. Bui Van Hung, Principal of Phan Dang Luu High School, said: Last year, the school's entrance score was 24, in the top of the schools with the highest standard scores in the province. However, students do not need to focus too much on scores or ratios, but it is important to review well to master the knowledge in textbooks, have a scientific and careful method of doing the test. If students pass the entrance exam to high schools, it is a good thing. But if their ability is limited, they can choose other options such as streaming, vocational training, or supplementary education. Starting this year, high school students and continuing education students will take the same exam, so their rights are equal, regardless of their qualifications as before.

Currently, high schools in the province are urgently reviewing to prepare grade 12 students for the national high school exam. At Phan Dang Luu High School (Yen Thanh), the subject that is given the most priority for review is English because in the recent mock exam and the final exam at the end of the year, the number of students who failed in English was the highest. Sharing this, Mr. Nguyen Van Tien, Head of the Foreign Language Department, said: In the recently organized exams, we tried to create questions close to the sample exam given by the Ministry of Education and Training. During the exam, students all completed the multiple-choice part, but many students still took the test randomly because they did not have a firm grasp of the knowledge, so the results were not high. In the essay part, only students taking the D exam did well, the rest did not write well. To overcome this limitation, we require teachers to teach grammar carefully and practice many exercises so that students get familiar with the types of questions and consolidate their knowledge.

At Ky Son Ethnic Boarding High School (Ky Son), the thing that the school is most worried about is students dropping out of exams. In fact, since the beginning of the year, 18 12th graders have dropped out of school due to family circumstances, poor academic performance or simply because they do not want to go to school. Therefore, although the school has organized a survey exam for students in all 3 grades, next week students will start summer vacation, but for 12th graders, the school organized an early parent meeting to encourage families to create conditions for students to stay at school to review and prepare for the national high school exam.

Mr. Le Duc Cat, the school's principal, said: More than 80% of the students in the school are living off-campus with limited living conditions. In addition, parents have not paid much attention to their children's studies. The problem of students dropping out of exams is very worrying. To help students be proactive before the exam, the school has classified students into groups to provide tutoring and review guidance, while also increasing testing and self-testing to promptly adjust teaching and learning methods to suit each group of students.

According to the plan, the entrance exam for grade 10 in Nghe An province will take place in 2 days (June 9 and 10) with 3 subjects: Literature, Math, and Foreign Language. Currently, the review work for the exam is being directed regularly by schools, ensuring adherence to the program, organizing tutoring for average and weak students. Regarding the national high school exam, in addition to the final exam, schools have organized 2-3 mock exams for students to familiarize them with the exam method, get used to the format of the questions and help them self-evaluate their learning results to have appropriate review methods. The way the questions are set is according to the sample exam of the Ministry of Education and Training with 4 levels: recognition, understanding, application and high application to assess students' abilities.

The Department of Education and Training has also issued a document requesting schools, professional groups, and teachers of exam subjects to proactively develop good review plans and content, paying attention to the knowledge content of the adjusted program; review must ensure time, focusing on the requirements of knowledge and skills standards of the high school education program, mainly in the 12th grade program. In addition, schools direct homeroom teachers to proactively coordinate with teachers of graduation exam subjects to group students according to cognitive ability, according to elective exam subjects; assign teachers with ability, experience, and enthusiasm to guide review; pay attention to helping students with weak academic performance, mobilize good and excellent students to provide additional support, helping them grasp basic knowledge and skills according to program requirements; for good and excellent students, there should be flexible review time, increase self-study with guidance from subject teachers. Schools need to support students in self-study by creating facilities, supplementary materials and answering students' questions.
