The Prime Minister has just decided that the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) will not continue to implement the project of the 5-star hotel complex, trade center, amusement park and oil and gas tower.

The Government Office has just issued a document notifying the Prime Minister's opinion on the implementation of the oil and gas tower. Accordingly, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group will not continue to implement the project of the 5-star hotel complex, trade center, amusement park and oil and gas tower on a 25-hectare land in Me Tri commune, Tu Liem district, Hanoi to focus resources on core business activities in accordance with the Government's policy.

The project will be assigned to the Vietnam Oil and Gas Construction Joint Stock Corporation to continue implementing on an area of 21.2 hectares. When implementing the above project, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group will only contribute capital to build the Group's office at a minimum level and will not use the Group's name in this project, changing the name of the Oil and Gas Tower to another name.

In March 2011, PVN Tower was adjusted from 102 floors to 79 floors. The adjustment plan for the PVN Tower project was announced by PVC one day after the National Assembly's discussion session on the project.reinvestment 3,500 billion dongfor the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group. Many delegates said that the reinvestment of 3,500 billion VND for the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group in the context of tightening public spending is unreasonable. Some delegates even worried about the multi-sector investment situation, typically the number one building in Vietnam (PVN Tower).

The Vietnam Oil and Gas Tower Complex has the functions of a class A office, a 6-star hotel, a commercial center and luxury apartments built on lot X1, on an area of 6.5 hectares, part of the 25-hectare architectural complex construction project in Me Tri commune, Tu Liem district, Hanoi. The project will withstand earthquakes of 7 MSK (about 6 Richter) higher than current construction standards in Vietnam.

Previously, PVC awarded prizes to three designs for the oil and gas tower. The first prize was awarded 50,000 USD, the second prize was 30,000 USD, and the third prize was 20,000 USD. The Vietnam Oil and Gas Tower is expected to start construction in 2012. The first prize went to the design of Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects - USA (designer of the Petronas Twin Towers - Malaysia). The second prize went to Fender Katsalidis Architects (FKA) - Australia (designer of the Eureka Tower - Melbourne, the tallest in Australia). The third prize went to the PCIC-Codinachs-Samoo Joint Venture (Spain).

Currently, the tallest building in Vietnam is Keangnam Landmark Tower (345 m). However, this title is being competed by VietinBank Tower (362 m) and PVN Tower (no more than 500 m). When completed, PVN Tower is expected to be the tallest skyscraper in Vietnam.
