According to Toyota's statement, of the 6.39 million recalled vehicles, about 3.5 million vehicles will have their cables replaced, a device believed to be the cause of the airbag not deploying in the event of a collision.
About 50 percent of these vehicles were manufactured between April 2004 and December 2010 in the North American market. Meanwhile, about 2.32 million three-door vehicles manufactured between January 2005 and August 2010 were recalled to check the slider, which is believed to cause the seat to slide forward in a collision.
The remaining vehicles recalled are due to defects in the steering column, wiper blades and engine start button. This is Toyota's largest single-day recall since October 2012, when the company recalled 7.43 million Yaris, Corolla and other models due to defects in the door buttons.
Toyota said that at the time of the recall announcement, the company had not received any information related to collisions or casualties due to faulty equipment. It also did not specify the cost of the recall or the cause of the technical errors mentioned above.
Toyota’s massive recall coincides with a congressional investigation into technical defects in several GM vehicles. Congress is expected to hold hearings to determine why GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) were slow to report vehicle defects and address issues related to technical defects after receiving customer complaints.
An investigation report released on March 14 by the Center for Auto Safety (USA) said that a total of more than 300 people died in traffic accidents due to faulty airbags.
Specifically, these airbags did not deploy in 1.6 million passenger vehicles that GM recalled last month. The death toll is much higher than GM's report that there were only 13 deaths in more than 30 accidents related to the recalled vehicles.
Previously, Chrysler recalled nearly 870,000 sports cars due to a defect in the brake pedal system./.
