Focus on taking care of winter-spring rice

The Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) has just issued a document directing the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the northern provinces and cities to focus on implementing measures to care for the 2014 spring rice crop.

In particular, with early spring rice, the rice has tillered to the maximum and is in the stage of panicle differentiation. To limit ineffective tillering, it is necessary to drain the water from the field surface, dry the field until the ground is hard so that the rice roots can penetrate, helping the plant to be strong, healthy and resistant to lodging. After 5-7 days, continue to add water, combine with additional potassium fertilizer, then maintain the water level of the field at 2-3cm, creating favorable conditions for the rice to form panicles and bloom.

Rice fields and rice fields planted after Tet and damaged by cold, are now in the tillering to standing stage, so care needs to be finished early, fertilizing with concentrated and balanced NPK.

Farmers need to regularly visit fields, detect and promptly prevent pests, diseases and rats that harm rice.

Along with that, localities recommend and guide farmers to regularly visit fields, promptly detect and prevent pests, diseases and rats that harm rice, especially for objects such as rice blast, brown planthoppers, leaf rollers, stem borers and rats...

Mr. Tran Xuan Dinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production, said that this year's Winter-Spring rice will ripen 7-10 days later than in normal years. Therefore, localities need to proactively develop production plans for the summer-autumn crop and the winter-spring crop based on the sowing schedule, seed structure and appropriate technical solutions, and prepare enough seeds and materials for the next crop.

According to local reports, the total acreage of winter-spring rice crop 2013-2014 in the Northern provinces is about 795,000 hectares, and the North Central region is 344,000 hectares, reaching 100% of the plan. However, due to prolonged cold, especially the average daily temperature and sunshine hours in February and March lower than the average of many years, spring rice growth and development is slow, and blast disease is strongly emerging in some localities.

It is expected that the rice growth time will be 7-10 days slower than the average of many years depending on the rice crop.
