'Akula' submarine - Russia's most terrifying military equipment
The Soviet Union built the largest submarines in the world, and the submarine model of project 941 "Akula" became one of the "most terrible types of military equipment" created by man, - according to the assessment of expert Kyle Mizokami from The National Interest magazine.

These "ocean monsters" can destroy up to two hundred targets with the help of nuclear warheads six times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Such submarines are capable of "destroying an entire country," — the article commented.
The submarine of project 941 "Akula" (or Typhoon according to NATO classification coding) was created as the sea part of the "nuclear triad" of the USSR and was the answer to the American submarine of the "Ohio" type, — the author reminds.
The "Akula" was designed with Arctic operations in mind and featured a reinforced block structure, allowing it to overcome polar ice floes, a large buoyancy reserve and two protected propellers.
Another Soviet invention was the new R-39 ballistic missile, which had a long range that allowed it to reach any point on the territory of the United States. Although the Akula submarines carried 20 missiles compared to 24 missiles on the American Ohio submarine, each R-39 missile carried 10 individually guided nuclear warheads, which allowed it to attack up to 10 different targets at the same time. Thus, the Akula could carry up to 200 nuclear warheads, while the American submarines had only 192, — expert Kyle Mizokami compared.
The Soviet Union planned to build 8 submarines of the "Akula" project, but eventually built 6. Now the Russian Navy has only one submarine of this type, the "Dmitry Donskoy", - said the expert of The National Interest magazine.
