Catalonia's "national day" demonstration comes amid heightened political tensions three months before a general election in Spain, the fourth-largest economy in the eurozone.
Meanwhile, the Spanish government announced that the number of people participating in the march in Barcelona was between 520,000 and 550,000.
Polls last week showed that candidates supporting Catalonia's separation from Spain would win a majority of seats in the local legislature in elections this September.
Catalan government leader Artur Mas has pledged that if they win, they will adopt an 18-month roadmap to separate from Spain.
