Boycott watching EURO copyright 5 million USD
(Baonghean) -Since Euro 2008, the Swiss-based Sportfive (S5) company has exploited television copyrights in Vietnam for 2 million USD. S5's super profits are due to domestic TV stations racing to devalue copyrights regardless of their real value.
The figure of 2 million USD that year was much larger than that offered by some rich European countries. In Vietnam, with the second largest international football fan base in the world, our TV stations made things difficult for themselves, so the company offered 5 million USD for the Euro 2012 final television rights, 3 times higher than EURO 2008.

We, the fans, would rather suffer a loss this season than see foreign partners forcing broadcasters to buy copyrights at all costs. Vietnam is still poor, and cannot afford to spend a fortune on copyrights at exorbitant prices, equivalent to more than 100 billion VND. Remember, in early 2010, Singapore bought the rights to broadcast the English Premier League, but the supplier offered too high a price, so their government stepped in and asked domestic broadcasters to coordinate and agree on a suitable price, otherwise Singapore would not watch the English Premier League. Singapore's determination forced its partners to lower their prices.
Should we learn to boycott the 5 million USD copyright EURO to show our attitude of protecting the rights of Vietnamese TV stations?
