Preparing for the Independence Day of the Thai ethnic group
On the morning of September 2, Mr. Vi Van Can (head of Lanh village, Chau Binh commune, Quy Chau district) boasted to us: People who work far away have all returned home to gather with their families to celebrate Independence Day. This year, despite many economic difficulties, most families still try to buy the necessary offerings and food for Tet. Lanh village has 113 households (100% of whom are Thai ethnic people), but more than 50% are poor households. Before Tet, village officials held meetings to educate people about the meaning of Independence Day and to limit excessive drinking, which can cause public disorder.
To entertain friends and guests on this occasion, the dishes and drinks are always prepared quite carefully by the people and it is also an opportunity for the descendants to report their achievements to Uncle Ho and their ancestors. During these days, all the farming and farming work of the villagers is temporarily suspended, making time for the activities to celebrate Independence Day. This is also the time for the villagers to visit, congratulate each other on good health, good luck in business and gather around the dinner table.
Independence Day is not only an opportunity for people to interact with each other, but also contributes to increasing solidarity and unity among ethnic groups. Besides, it also reminds and educates the younger generation to love freedom and national pride.
