On the afternoon of March 21, the Bac Lieu Sub-Department of Exploitation and Protection of Aquatic Resources in coordination with local authorities released a rare sea turtle weighing more than 15 kg (photo) into the natural environment at the estuary of Nha Mat ward, Bac Lieu city.
According to experts, it is likely that this is a turtle species with the scientific name Cretta Caretta, belonging to the family Vich (sea turtles), distributed throughout Vietnam.Male, concentrated in Bach Long Vi and Cat Ba islands (Hai Phong). This sea turtle is a rare aquatic species in danger of extinction, absolutely prohibited from catching, buying, selling, and transporting.

Based on information from local people, on the morning of March 21, the police of Ward 2 (Bac Lieu City) and the Bac Lieu Sub-Department of Exploitation and Protection of Aquatic Resources inspected the house of Mr. Huynh Trung Truc (54 years old, in Hamlet 3, Ward 2) who was raising a large sea turtle. Through observation, it was determined that this was a rare and endangered sea turtle species. Therefore, the authorities decided to confiscate and release the turtle into the sea. Mr. Truc explained that last week, he bought this turtle from a fisherman at Nha Mat estuary for 1 million VND to raise.
