Thach Kim Tuan is the number one hope of Vietnamese weightlifting. |
In his competition, Thach Kim Tuan successfully conquered 126 kg in snatch and 153 kg in clean and jerk, achieving a total of 279 kg. Although not his best result (having achieved 131 in snatch and 151 in clean and jerk at AIMAG in September), the Vietnamese weightlifter still won all three gold medals in the men's 56 kg weight class at the 2017 World Championships.
Competing with Thach Kim Tuan in the 56 kg weight class was his teammate Tran Le Quoc Toan. This weightlifter won two silver medals in snatch (119 kg) and total lift (270 kg), and a bronze medal in clean and jerk (151 kg).
With his achievements in the US, Thach Kim Tuan rose to third place among the weightlifters who won the most gold medals at the world weightlifting championships, with 10. He is on par with Wang Shin-yuan (Taiwan), behind Wu Jingbiao (China, 12 gold medals) and Long Qingquan (China, 12 gold medals).
Thach Kim Tuan did not achieve his best performance, but still won the gold medal thanks to a series of world-class weightlifters not being allowed to participate in the tournament. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) decided to ban nine weightlifting powers including Russia, China, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Ukraine from sending their teams to compete due to violations of regulations on stimulant use.
The US host also did not allow the DPRK to send its top weightlifters to attend due to tensions between the two countries surrounding instability on the Korean peninsula.
