According to Mr. Abhisit, the new DP leadership elected at this meeting will decide whether the DP will boycott the general election proposed by the government or not.

Previously, DP lawmakers resigned en masse to join the wave of anti-government protests led by DP Vice President Suthep Thaugsuban.

In an effort to ease tensions, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on December 9 announced the dissolution of parliament and proposed a general election, scheduled for February 2, 2014.

However, protesters demanded the establishment of a People's Council to replace the caretaker government in order to carry out political reforms before elections.

Mr. Suthep declared that he would not disperse the protests until Ms. Yingluck Shinawatra resigned.

Although the DP enjoys support from the urban middle class, it has not won a majority in elections for more than two decades.

The DP hopes that the reform will help the party gain power./.
