At 9:40 p.m. on August 29, Nghe An General Hospital received emergency care for pregnant woman Nguyen Thi Dung (34 years old), 33 weeks pregnant, transferred from Vientiane (Laos). The pregnant woman was hospitalized due to a gunshot wound that penetrated from the neck to the ribs, causing septic shock, respiratory failure, and cardiovascular collapse. The prognosis for both Dung and the fetus upon admission was very poor.
Immediately, the interdisciplinary consultation of Surgery, Obstetrics, and Surgical Resuscitation determined to focus on saving the mother and child. However, the mother Dung had a continuous high fever, the ultrasound image of the fetus showed a state of chorionic villus edema, signs of very high fetal distress, the baby could die in the mother's womb at any time, so it was required to urgently perform an emergency cesarean section to remove the fetus from the mother's womb. At 5:00 p.m., August 30, the 2kg baby girl was born.
Because the baby was affected by the mother's critical health condition, prolonged lack of oxygen, and the effects of sedatives from the mother, the newborn baby was born without a cry, cyanotic, with reduced muscle tone and weak newborn reflexes. "The hospital quickly performed resuscitation on the baby in the operating room, suctioned fluid, and continuously squeezed the balloon, but the baby still could not breathe on its own, so they had to intubate the baby, support the baby with a ventilator, and race against time to save the baby's life. After 1 day of having to lie on a ventilator in the special care room, the Neonatal Unit - Obstetrics Department, the baby girl has progressed better, is learning to wean off the ventilator, and is being closely monitored for her health," said Dr. Tran Thuy Ha, Obstetrics Department.
Currently, due to the bullet wound's unpredictable path, patient Nguyen Thi Dung is still in critical condition, in a coma, and must be actively ventilated and closely treated.
